were accepted to the following Catholic high schools: We are proud of you.
Pre-K, Kindergarten Three-year-olds who will be four in the fall and five-year-olds are invited to join the outstanding spiritual and academic program here at St. Joseph the Worker School. We ask those of you who have experienced our program to spread the word about the high quality of our programs, which is confirmed by observing our students at Mass, social events, games, and in the classroom. As you are preparing to enroll your child for any grade in the new school year (2010-2011), remember that you are invited to come to St. Joseph the Worker School for a tour during summer school hours. You will be amazed at the students as they respond to their teachers and visitors about their school. Come and be our guest. If you have not enrolled because of cost, come and you will find that our tuition is the lowest in the area. We realize that it is financially difficult for some families, but our parents and grandparents know that the Catholic identity, the progress, and the spirit of the whole school community are worth the sacrifice.
Thank you to all in the parish who continue to help us with our fundraising and monthly or yearly donations. “Your reward will be great in heaven!” More and more families need some assistance to keep their children here or to enroll them in St. Joseph the Worker School. Some parents in our school have lost jobs but still believe in the value of a Catholic education. The school receives no assistance from the Sunday parish collection or from Together in Mission, the Archdiocesan program that helps support needy schools and parishes. Our fundraising projects and contributions from a few of our parishioners have been a great help. but we are praying that more parishioners, friends, and alumni will make a commitment to offer some tuition assistance.
St. Joseph the Worker School has a very dedicated and productive ConsultativeBoard. Our President is Frank Bucher, whose two sons graduated from SJW. Board members include alumni parents and grandparents, faculty members, parishioners, and business partners. During the past year, the Board finished the outline for our Strategic Plan, which will always be in progress to guarantee constant growth and development. The Faculty will be completing the guidelines for a WCEA (Western Catholic Educational Association) and WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) accreditation visit, due in 2012.

MISSION AND MINISTRY AT SJW SCHOOL For all parishioners, especially those who have not had the experience of attending or sending children to a Catholic School, we would like to share our mission and the difference between Catholic and public schools. St. Joseph the Worker School community has a value-centered education (all subjects and programs) committed to the threefold ministry of the church: love, service, and witness. Parents are the primary educators of their children. The faculty and staff collaborate with them in educating the students spiritually, intellectually, physically, and aesthetically. We affirm that each child is unique, and with dignity and respect, we guide each student to attain his/her fullest potential. We are committed to nurturing a community that encourages understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. While celebrating our diversity, we define ourselves as members of one Body, the Body of Christ. WE INVITE ALL PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS WHO VALUE THE ABOVE DESCRIPTION OF THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION TO COME TO OUR SCHOOL FOR A FIRST HAND LOOK AT THIS MISSION IN ACTION AND COMPARE IT TO THE PUBLIC OR CHARTER EXPERIENCES YOUR CHILDREN MAY BE EXPERIENCING. IN THE COMING WEEKS WE WILL SHARE PORTIONS OF THE CURRICULUM OF GRADES K-8 THAT ALLOWS THE CHILDREN TO GROW IN THE KNOWLEDGE, SERVICE AND PRACTICE OF THEIR FAITH WHILE EXPERIENCING A CARING ENVIRONMENT. Thank you to all the parents who are making sacrifices during these difficult times to send your children to St. Joseph the Worker School. ST. JOSEPH THE WORKER SCHOOL: DIVIDENDS FOR LIFE Catholic Schools Week celebrates the important role that Catholic elementary and secondary schools across the country play in providing a values-added education for young people. A Catholic school education goes beyond preparation for a secular life – it is education that prepares students for a Christian life. We can take pride in the high standards of excellence and the quality of the education available to all students in our Catholic elementary and secondary schools. The dividends of a Catholic school education last for a lifetime. This coming week we celebrate the mission and achievements of our own parish school. St. Joseph the Worker School is committed to the threefold ministry of the Church: love, service, and witness. Solidly grounded in the Catholic tradition, we work to create a faith community instilled with gospel values among our students, faculty, and staff. Our school provides a caring educational environment for the social, spiritual, academic, and physical development of each student in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Curriculum The curriculum includes English, reading, mathematics, art, music, religion, spelling, social studies, science, computer applications, and physical education. The results of longitudinal studies and the Standardized Achievement Test show that students in each grade progress beyond the grade level at which they began the school year. By the time students reach the eighth grade, more than half have eleventh-grade communication and math skills. Our excellent teachers and dedicated parents involved in their children’s education are key partners in establishing this foundation for success. The school library and computer lab are favorite places for the students to visit. The school librarian and our computer science teacher assist students – kindergarten through eighth grade – and encourage them in their exploration of the world around them. Community We are a community that values prayer life and faith. This is obvious in the daily practices of our students and faculty, not only in religion class, but throughout the day. Each grade takes a turn in preparing a School Mass. We are proud of our faith, our community, and our curriculum. Many of our alumni remain active in our school community as parents, teachers, and Board Members. Student Life Students develop leadership skills by serving on the Student Council. The Student Council leads a school-wide assembly every Wednesday. Council members plan and supervise activities for the different seasons as well as Play Day, Catholic Schools Week, and yearly service projects and council elections. Many of our students enjoy athletics and compete in the Valley League in a variety of sports, under the guidance of the Athletic Director, who manages a sports program for grades four through eight. Administration Our pastor, Fr. Kevin Rettig, is the school’s chief administrative officer. The pastor has administrative, finance, and spiritual responsibilities in relation to the school. The immediate direction and supervision of the school is delegated to the principal, with the assistance of a Consultative Board for Finance, Marketing, Strategic Planning, and Plant Management and Improvement. Parents form the Parent Teacher Organization to assist with Fund Raising, Sports, General Operations and Safety. Officers of the PTO meet to plan general meetings and keep current with school operations.
